A Dynamic Collective of Local Artists

Valerie O'Flynn

My themes are social and sometimes political, my materials often sculptural, painted, or mixed media.  With so many things that take the time and attention of people on a day to day basis, issues on the periphery of many lives are last on the priority list.  I choose to shine a light on some issues I see as important and feel deserve a second look, or ones that our better selves would have us do something about.  I also engage in celebrating the things we do value, sometimes nature, sometimes those better or greater selves, ie., Glenn Gould; or Brian Dennehy’s work at the Stratford Festival.   Recent pieces address these themes: issues- Revel in our...;  Busy Bees; In a celebratory theme: the power and beauty in nature and inspiration we find in some people-  Hero worship #4 Brian Dennehy; and Harvest moon.

Valerie O’Flynn is a multidisciplinary artist.  She most commonly uses acrylic, fibreglass, soapstone, and polymer clay.  She graduated from Western University with a BFA (Honours), and a B.Ed. where sculpture and printmaking were her practicum media. Ms. O’Flynn was the Head of Arts at Stratford Northwestern S.S. for many years. She has been a member of Gallery 96 Stratford, an artist run centre, since 1993.  She has won three jury awards in her career (one a purchase award from Western), and is represented in many private collections across Canada.
