A Dynamic Collective of Local Artists

Jennifer Akkermans

I use the house motif as a metaphor for a missing sense of belonging. These houses are physical representations of my own psychological landscape. I use my own art journaling techniques as a surface treatment, incorporating paint, collage, mixed media and personal journaling. In the work, I am trying to find a sense of home for myself, which does not yet exist.

Jennifer Akkermans is a Canadian artist, far from home.  Originally from a Hanna, Alberta, she currently lives and works in Waterloo, Ontario.  In the fall of 2014, Jennifer packed her P.T. Cruiser and drove across the country to pursue her MFA at the University of Waterloo. Since then, she has used herself as a case study to examine how one might build a new home. She has exhibited in art galleries across the country.
